How to Find a Good Pilates Teacher

3 Things to Look For

One question we hear often, especially from clients who are moving or beginning Pilates for the first time, is:

“How do I find a good Pilates teacher?”

Whether you’re brand new to Pilates or an experienced mover looking for a studio that truly supports you, these are the qualities that matter most.

1. Strong, comprehensive training

A well-trained Pilates teacher has completed a comprehensive in-person training program, usually 500+ hours that include anatomy, classroom study, observation, and hands-on practice, from a reputable school or studio. They’re trained on most (if not all) Pilates apparatus, not just the reformer, and they understand why they choose the tower, chair, or barrel for a specific client or movement.

Just as important as their initial training is their curiosity. Great teachers stay engaged with continuing education, workshops, and evolving movement science. They bring new insights into their sessions, and you can feel their love for the work.

A teacher’s training isn’t just about credentials; it directly impacts your safety, your progress, and your overall experience.

2. The ability to meet you where you are

Pilates becomes truly transformative when the teacher adapts the work to your body, your needs, and your season of life.

A skillful instructor can quickly modify, scale, or entirely rethink an exercise based on how you’re feeling that day: pain, restriction, injury, stress, energy, or progress. Even in group classes, a great teacher can offer thoughtful variations for different abilities.

This is very different from a one-size-fits-all routine that never changes. When a teacher responds to the person in front of them, you feel seen, supported, and safe... and you progress more meaningfully.

3. Empowerment over perfection

The best Pilates teachers don’t create dependency. They create confidence.

You should leave a session feeling encouraged, capable, and more connected to your body-- not defeated, confused, or like you’re “doing it wrong.” A great teacher wants you to learn principles you can take into your daily life and to grow stronger and more aware over time.

At Soma Lux, we believe in being guides: partners in your movement, not gurus on a pedestal. We want you to feel hopeful, empowered, and proud of what your body can do.

Why this matters for beginners in Dripping Springs

Many movers come to Pilates because they want to feel better in their bodies, whether that means reducing pain, improving mobility, getting stronger, moving confidently again after an injury, or aging well through middle age and beyond.

A thoughtful, well-trained, adaptable teacher makes all the difference. Pilates taught well can help you move comfortably, breathe deeper, stand taller, and feel more at home in your body, no matter your age, ability, or starting point.

At Soma Lux, these are the values that guide us

These principles shape every session we teach. Our clients entrust us with something precious — their time, energy, and health — and we’re honored to be part of their movement journey.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning after time away, we’re here to meet you where you are and support you in moving well through every season of life.
