3 Fitness Myths I Wish More People Would Stop Believing
Time to retire this advice

If you've spent any time in the fitness world, you've probably heard advice like:
"No pain, no gain."
"If you're not sweating, it doesn't count."
"The harder the workout, the better the results."
Some of these ideas have been repeated for so long that they've become accepted as fact. But after more than a decade of teaching Pilates to everyone from athletes and new moms to people recovering from injury or managing chronic pain, I've found that many of the most common fitness "rules" simply aren't true.
Here are three I wish more people would stop believing.
Myth #1: "If You're Not Sore, It Didn't Work."
Soreness is one possible response to exercise—but it isn't a measure of success.
You might feel sore after trying a new activity or increasing the intensity of a workout, but you can also make tremendous progress without soreness. Some of the most effective Pilates sessions leave clients feeling stronger, taller, and more mobile—not achy.
Instead of chasing soreness, pay attention to improvements in strength, control, balance, endurance, and how your body feels throughout the day.
Myth #2: "If You're Not Sweating, It Doesn't Count."
Sweat tells you your body is cooling itself. That's all. How much you sweat depends on many factors, including temperature, humidity, genetics, and the type of activity you're doing.
Pilates often challenges deep stabilizing muscles, coordination, posture, and balance without producing buckets of sweat. That doesn't make it any less effective.
Some of the most important changes happen beneath the surface: improved movement quality, better body awareness, greater joint stability, and more efficient movement patterns.
Myth #3: "The Harder the Workout, the Better the Results."
This may be the biggest myth of all. Your body doesn't become stronger during a workout. It becomes stronger while recovering from it. Exercise provides the stimulus. Recovery is where adaptation happens.
The most successful fitness routine isn't the one that leaves you exhausted every day. It's the one that's challenging enough to stimulate progress, balanced enough to allow recovery, and enjoyable enough that you'll still be doing it a year from now.
That's one reason we emphasize sustainable movement at Soma Lux Pilates. We want clients to leave feeling challenged—but also capable of coming back and moving well again tomorrow.
A Different Way to Think About Exercise
At Soma Lux Pilates in Dripping Springs, our goal isn't simply to help people exercise.
It's to help them build bodies that feel strong, capable, resilient, and enjoyable to live in.
Some days that means working hard. Some days it means moving gently. Both have value. Fitness isn't about proving how tough you are. It's about building habits that support your health for years to come.
If you're looking for Pilates in Dripping Springs that emphasizes intelligent movement, individualized instruction, and long-term wellness over quick fixes, we'd love to welcome you to the studio.
